Typically I think design by committee is a bad idea and hinders progress. A small number of people can make good decisions and get things working much faster.

However, if this can turn into a a learning experience, I'm open to the idea. Ideas on how that might work at an installfest or meeting? Also we are definitely willing to listen to input on what/how, but ultimately I think it should the the job of only a few people to make the final decisions and execute it.

Very well done spiffy, this is a wonderful compromise for now.

Could we arrange a meeting to collectively set up the machine? I would not be opposed to putting the setup discussions on Reddit. Or even bundling it into an installfest would be nice; I've been thinking about trying another flavor of Linux after the pains of my Ubuntu 9.10 upgrade (Arch or Fedora probably). But anyway I'd be interested in everyone's contributions on the perfect Linux server setup. I tried Ubuntu Server on a computer at home and found it to not meet my needs, but maybe I could learn something new.

In the interest of making progress, we have acquired a machine from
Surplus. This came at no cost to the LUG, because Dr. Freeh hooked us
up with a departmental transfer. Dr. Freeh has also arranged for us to
house the machine in a server room near his office. Thanks, Dr. Freeh!

The machine is an old Gateway workstation with a 40GB HDD, 2GB RAM,
and a 3.0GHz P4 processor.

These specs allow us to do many of the things we're interested in,
such as host websites and persistent screen sessions. We will not get
to provide an on-campus package repository with 40GB, nor will we be
able to provide users with completely isolated operating environments
a la virtual machines.

This machine will let us evaluate how satisfied the LUG is with the
limits of free. The SC will be come up with cost estimates for a
better machine, and a budget, so we have concrete numbers to talk
about if the Surplus machine doesn't work out.
