Hi David, thanks for the email and I apologize for taking so long to reply to this.
I'm not aware of anyone at NCSULUG who lives around Morehead City. If you're interested in bringing tech inclined people together though, I would suggest founding a hackerspace if you don't have one in the area (and joining one if you do!) because you will likely get more attendees. Linux as the topic of interest for a club was more relevant 20 years ago, before there were graphical installers and a wealth of online wikis that interested & computer literate people could use to educate themselves. Frankly even here at NCSU, a university known for having a good computer science program, LUG membership is low and retention is difficult. Too few people care about the free software movement / linux as a daily operating system to regularly attend a club about it. However if you broaden your scope to include people interested in e.g. radio, 3d printing, programming, telecom, embedded devices, etc etc you will probably do better in terms of membership. And yes I would imagine any higher ed institutions in the area would be a great place to recruit.
Wish I could be of more assistance, good luck getting people together. I hear meetup.com is a great way to get area organizations started.

I would like to start a LUG down here in Morehead City... Do you have any members or requests by people down here? I believe the community college would likely provide some interested people.
I do webhosting using Linux and had been using Solaris up till last month. Linux has developed into a pretty unbeatable platform. I was ready to switch.
Although Debian may have an edge, I think Mint 18.2 Cinamon is pretty hard to beat.
