The simple answer is purpose. a Beowulf cluster is designed for the purpose of using many machines to perform a single task very quickly. HA is designed to use multiple machines to ensure that a process/processes remains active, regardless of all other factors, usually involving multiple machines as backups. Is load balancing HA? Not really. Load balancing (distributing incoming traffic amongst multiple machines) is a good method to eliminate a failure weakpoint, and thus strengthen a HA solution, but isnt itself a HA solution. Side note: When Turbolinux was informed of this little technicality, they removed their HA claim from their Cluster Server.
